Week one in digital storytelling came with some difficulties. It is a shorter course, there is no face to face interaction with the professor, and people are taking the class for different reasons. Personally, I’m taking the class because I enjoy web design, as well as projects that take place on computers, and the class happens to fit into my major. Digital story telling presents me with a unique opportunity that allows me to create projects online, while still practicing using my domain name as a digital identity.
The first week of any class tends to be difficult because you are learning what the teacher wants of you as a student as you go. Online classes are no different, there’s just no face to face interaction with the professor making it even harder. This week we had to create a new digital identity for ourselves to use throughout the summer semester. The first thing I chose to create was my website. I already use my domain given by the school as a personal website but I wanted to create a specific website for only class. To do this I created a subdomain from my site. On this site I used different menus for different projects that I will create throughout the summer semester.
The first project for us this summer was to create social media that will be used for the class, as well as answering the question of the week. There were some social media accounts that I had to create, and some that I already had and was able to use. The accounts I created are listed below. On the Instagram account that I created I posted three photos, that I described myself the best way that I could using only three photos. Another small project we had to do was our daily create, where we edited a picture to tweet out.
After creating the social media accounts I wanted to show them in their own special way on my new blogsite. I knew that I was going to be creating and posting a lot of content on the site, so I thought that it would look best for the social media accounts to have their own section. I was able to accomplish this using the menu functions that WordPress provides, and creating a page for each section of the class. I have a page that shows a little more information on myself, a page for class blog posts, and a page to show off my social media accounts (and what I have created on them). As I continue to create more content my overall goal with this site is to clean it up, and make it look like a professional site to show off my content. To do this I will have to keep the front pages more organized, as well as insert pictures to make it seem as professional as possible.
